Brian and Irene from the UK visited South Africa in August, spending some days in Cape Town and then traveling onto the Garden Route before arriving in Durban for a four day tour with Umzinyathi Safaris. On tour we were accompanied by Duncan, who is presently undergoing practical in-service training as a Tour Guide. The short and relatively mild winter that we had experienced in KwaZulu-Natal was giving way to an early spring, being heralded by the vocal resident bird-life. There was an injection of freshness in the air, and the game sightings were very rewarding during our visit. Sightings over the four day trip, many from close quarters, included a herd of over 180 elephant, 4 lion, about 30 white rhino, buffalo by the score, and much other wild‑game including hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, and many species of antelope. We also recorded a total of over 100 different bird species during the 4 day tour. On our last evening we stayed overnight at Emdoneni Lodge, which venue also includes the cheetah & serval projects. After two good meals and a good nights sleep we ventured back into the Hluhluwe Game Reserve on the last day to slowly wend our way southwards to Lake St Lucia, where we enjoyed a 2 hour boat cruise with some close-up sightings of hippo and crocodile.
